Request for help with cover art

Sooo... Apparently Bandcamp requires cover art. I have never, ever in my life even considered that this could be a requirement. Therefore, not only am I unable to make any because blind, I also have absolutely no idea what I would want because I'm not sure what you would usually find in cover art to begin with. Does anyone have any ideas? All of my current music is on my Soundcloud (link in my profile).

re: Request for help with cover art

@guilevi just make an image with the text: "i am blind how do you expect me to design album art for my music" hehe

re: Request for help with cover art

@guilevi as far as i could really help, maybe if you could describe the aesthetic of the music, and then someone looks for an image that loosely resembles that, that could work maybe ?

@guilevi based on a quick skim through your SoundCloud songs, I think your current profile picture here on Mastodon (a monochrome photo of a person —who I assume is you— sitting behind a piano, looking at the camera) could actually work as cover art, perhaps overlaid with the album's title.

@FiXato Thank you for this! I would actually most likely release them as separate tracks, given that there is no relationship between them. Would it be acceptable to use the same picture with different overlays in this situation?

Request for help with cover art

@guilevi I would say it is. :)
Besides, if you get feedback to the contrary, I'm quite sure you can update the cover art at a later point in time.

@FiXato True enough. I think I may do this, or put the track name in Braille as someone else suggested, just to be annoying. :D Thank you!!

@Guillem Leon Here's an idea: Is it possible to generate a black square with the title of your album as braille dots in white or something? Gives you a cover, but also makes a statement. It will be as inaccessible for us seeing people, as a visual cover artwork is for you.

@harald Haha, that's not a bad idea! Though most of the time, unless I'm consciously trying to prove a point, I don't tend to advocate for accessibility by exclusion in that way. It's definitely a useful tool though haha

@Guillem Leon You're right, it's probably not the best way... but could be fun to do some time :) Good luck though, I'm not a graphic designer myself, but there should be plenty of them around the fediverse that could be willing to help you.

@guilevi A lot of genres I enjoy (vaporwave, ambient) make do with a found photograph as cover art. If you can find a collection of photographs that match the mood of your music and pick from those, that'd probably last you a while.

@guilevi But I like the idea other people have had to get something that communicates the fact that cover art is a pretty terrible requirement to begin with, like for example a monochrome square.

@Owlor I don't dislike the idea either, to be honest. I just don't know how worth it it is to try to "prove a point" in this situation. I'm guessing most people (if I were to build up some amount of audience) would really only be interested in the music and wouldn't stop to infer much from some unusual cover art haha

@guilevi
this is a very interesting question. my first idea: maybe some kind of reverse OCR text recognition. There are some A.I. image generators that generate an image based on few keywords. So a machine would do that job for you. Here is an example, where you have to enter text into a caption field and press the “Run Model” Button on the bottom of the page: https://vision-explorer.allenai.org/text_to_image_generation

hmm so you can’t check on the result, how it looks, but that’s the fun anyway with these generators in my opinion: to not care about the result, or more like, just accept the machines image. The images are also in square format, which is useful for bandcamp, but only 400px wide. Also the images might be protected by some copyright very probably, but maybe there are other similar generators out there…

I did one example run with your latest soundcloud beat “Not Dry” and try do do my best with image description.

@guilevi
Idea no 2: write a short “image description” of your cover image, which is not shown and make that the cover. A simple typographic cover art.

@fragmentscenario OK so this just made my day. Thank you so so so much for this link and your detailed description. This is one of those things I didn't know I needed!!

@guilevi
why not ask a friend who dabbles in design to make their own interpretation of your music in a visual form? or give them some input what inspired you to make those specific tracks and they find a photo that is free of copyright, like ones on unsplash.com, that corresponds to the process behind your music. the visual cover will create some context connected to your music. if you don't know anyone, just ask the fediverse in general who would like to help you.

@guilevi @fragmentscenario or let a human make the covers given a few keywords. I can give it a shot and make sure no copyright is violated.
