Hello everyone,
Soon, I need to look into getting another phone, as Android updates for my phone have stopped, so it's just security updates.
Unsure what the cutoff is, but I assume it's in the next year or two.
I'm lookingat potentially getting a #fairphone
What do people think of it? Any particular issues?
@Stealthy
No idea about the fair phone, but I'm extremely happy with my pixel 9a running #GrapheneOS . i went with the two profiles and the main one has no google. Barely need the google profile (largely I use it for Spotify). Now there's no tracking, no YouTube videos being pushed in my notifications... Its great
@Stealthy I've been using my Fairphone 3 for almost 6 years now and had to replace the bottom module (~20€) once because of USB-C wear-out. Another time, I had to clean the display's contact pins after I had repeatedly (multiple times within a few weeks) dropped the phone on concrete. Both repairs were easy and would've been impossible with other devices.
At 500€, the FP5 is only 50€ more expensive (minus inflation) than my FP3 and comes with 5 years of warranty, so I'd probably buy it myself.
@Stealthy (Importantly, the FP5 also supports custom ROMs like Calyx, iodé, /e/ and Lineage.)
@pixelcode @Stealthy If security is your priority, I would go with a Pixel and GrapheneOS. I got a Fairphone 5 with CalyxOS due to ease of repair. Updates always lag behind, though.
@Stealthy I've replaced a couple of Fairphone parts over the years and it's very doable and affordable. Can only recommend it
@Stealthy I've had a Fairphone4 for over two years and am very pleased with it overall.
The charging lead snapped off one of its connectors early on (the rather inflexible lead was probably to blame), but I just replaced this with a cheap USB C cable.
The upgrade (sidegrade?) to Android 14 is very much delayed, but I'm not too fussed.
I have a small issue where The Guardian app needs restarting in order to read more articles, but not sure if that's due to the app, the OS, or the phone.
@Stealthy
Fairphone 4 here. It's good as long as there are no issues. Two years ago they made it unusable in light conditions as the screen brightness didn't go up enough anymore. They fixed it after summer was over.
Another issue are ghost inputs. They decreased sensitivity. Now the phone doesn't recognize touches while lying on a table, especially with two fingers.
Camera app is quite good now, but it's not available in custom roms.
Security updates only every second month now.
@Stealthy i know nothing about the accessibility of fair phones, if they have google play services they have talkback, speeking of new phones i am still using an S20, upgrading in 8 months, think i will stick with Samsung cause they support there phones for 7 years now, also it would be very interesting to see how the S24 runs in 7 years, hope someone keeps one around for that long to tell us
