Uber will let riders disclose whether they're hard of hearing or have low vision soon. The company will also start pilot testing another self-identification option for riders with service animals in the US and Canada over the next few weeks. engadget.com/transportation/ub

Engadget · Uber will let riders disclose whether they're hard of hearing or have low visionBy Mariella Moon
Quiet public

@kev And when this shit gets to be required, that is when Uber and I are going to have a divorce!

Quiet public

@Pawpower I don't know if it will. Either way saying beforehand that you have a guide dog or that you're blind might help, but what do I know? I use a cane and rarely get rejected.

Quiet public

@kev I don't know, as I have never told anyone beforehand, and I am not about to start now. I am glad this exists for people who wish to do so, however, I hope the drivers are informed that this is not mandatory and the first time some asshole lectures me about why I didn't disclose, we are going to have a problem.

Quiet public

@Pawpower Fair point. I understand why someone might not want to disclose their service animal.

Quiet public

@kev I also don't disclose my disabilities unless the driver is actually at my location and I'm having difficulty finding them and I will tell them that I am blind and what items of clothing I'm wearing and what color they are. I feel very strongly that I want to be treated like everyone else that means I behave like everyone else and everyone else doesn't have to tell people ahead of time when they are requesting a good or service that is available to the general public.

Quiet public

@Pawpower @kev So much this!

Quiet public

@Pawpower @kev I have no problem disclosing my disability ahead of time, but I think it is going to be very important for Uber to make this optional.

Quiet public

@lerven @kev Yes, I'm happy for folks who want to do this but the first time some driver gets shirty with me about why I didn't disclose y'all gonna have to bail my ass out of jail lol.

Quiet public

@Pawpower @kev Like I said. I think it is totally acceptable to have the choice to disclose this, but I absolutely do not ever believe it should be required.

Quiet public

@Pawpower @kev I don't tell people either, and it's my right not to.

Quiet public

@kev @Pawpower I don’t have a guide dog, but I don’t think that someone who does have one should have to tell a driver beforehand. It is a law that someone with a dog can’t be refused, so there is no reason for a driver to know whether or not someone has a dog.

Public

@kev About time Uber did that.

Quiet public

@kev oh yay I'm glad they will because it saves me having to write that I'm blind every single time lol

Quiet public

@kev I feel like it will be nice to have them automatically know that I won't be able to see the car, at the same time I do have concerns about them being more likely to cancel. Maybe I'm way off base, but some people get so nervous about being around disabled people at all unfortunately, and I've personally had some drivers who I can tell are very off-put.

Public

@kev @alyssa6595 Hi. They better not start requiring this because I'm ditching them, if they do. I've tried it both ways. When I had a guide dog, I would often disclose that and notice that as soon as they read the note, some of them would cancel. I couldn't prove it, but I'm quite sure that they canceled because of the dog. So, I just let them deal with it when they drove up and saw me with my dog. Sadly, I don't have a dog right now and it does definitely make it easier and I don't stress about riding now like I used to. But, when I get a new dog, here we go again! You're darned if you do and you're darned if you don't disclose.
