my partner is sort of out of her depth, just got a mac and put on it. Is now trying to figure out how you actually read buffers? You can tab around the UI and select sessions, her mastodon session, and timelines, her home timeline, but then she can't seem to actually read the posts in her home timeline if she does anything else in the UI, such as composing a post. What are we missing? I've never used a mac before so I haven't a clue how to help her. It's as if the timeline contents just don't appear in the window. Tabbing past the buffers gives vertical scroll bar, and VO can find no table for the buffer itself. We're using imported data from a windows computer because we have no hope of remembering her tweesecake account credentials, does something about importing like that break the display? It just seems off that there are tables corresponding to the sessions and buffers lists, all well and good, and not one corresponding to the actual content list. @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons

@x0 @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons They don't appear in the window at least not to VO. From what I know the WX virtual list view control is inaccessible on Mac which is why you only see those 2 tables. If you tab enough times you should eventually focus that 3rd invisible list, which is hacked into speaking by sending announcements directly to VoiceOver through AccessibleOutput. And in turn for that to work, you have to allow for VoiceOver to be controlled through applescript in the general section of VoiceOver utility.

@pitermach Thanks much! Yeah that was the thing we missed, quicknav was on so the arrows weren't behaving as normal and we were confused by the control not appearing. Mona is obviously leagues better for mastodon but cake is the only accessible telegram on mac so...

@pitermach @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons Has unicode still not been fixed yet? She's trying to use emojis in the field and says they aren't working?

@x0 @pitermach @LaurenCeleste @app Nope, it works fine on Windows but not Mac, weirdly

@x0 @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons When it reads the buffer with the amount of items in it when you tab, you can press the up-and-down arrows to view what’s there. You can use command shift left and right arrows to switch between buffers I think it is, and navigate through items in each one with the arrows.

@x0 @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons No, shoot, that’s not right. Command left and right arrows move between the buffers I think, and command shift left and right arrows move between the sessions. I honestly would recommend Mona for mastodon on the Mac, it’s my favorite client and the navigation there makes way more sense. It ain’t free to access all of the features, but it’s really worth it.

@LockOrientation @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons I love Mona for Mac. It's amazing. It actually reminds me of the layout of the old NightOwl Twitter client.

@LockOrientation @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons Yes, command shift left and right arrows will cycle between buffers. If you want to know the keyboard shortcuts for each action, when in a session hit option plus M I believe to get a list of keyboard shortcuts.

@x0 @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons I recognize Tweesecake does other things besides Mastodon, but you really can't go wrong with Mona for Mac, IMO. @LaurenCeleste

@simon @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app At this point, I would have to agree. If we can make the interface any better in the rewrite, we definitely will try.

@masonasons @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app I'm not even saying that as a Tweesecake user; I don't have it on the Mac. But I do really like Mona. The limitations sound frustrating from all sides though.

@simon @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app Yeah... Yeah. Yeah, that.

@masonasons @simon @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app Sadly, with the current version, the mac side was more of an afterthought and it does kinda show. Well, originally, it was created as a no-interface app and mac support was added because we added a GUI later down the line. I do wonder if the new version of wxpython does support virtual lists any better though. that'll will be a good test. The new TC code is that complex you could probably easily swap out GUI frameworks LOL.

@josh @simon @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app I sadly doubt it. May be worth investigating Q's smart_list thingy, because from what I heard that does work on Mac.

@josh @masonasons @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app I didn't realize a rewrite was in the works; that sounds ... tedious but potentially really rewarding.
I haven't used the current Mac version; it sounds like it's usable if you make Apple Script work, which is good. I just know Mona is the usual amount of awesome, so I installed it and never looked back.

@josh @masonasons @simon @LaurenCeleste @app Still wonder what could possibly have happened to Unicode though. Mac is Unicode by default isn't it, it doesn't have this legacy codepage crap that Windows does. So where in the pipeline is it breaking?

Mew✨🥰
Quiet public

@x0 @josh @simon @LaurenCeleste @app That's what I'm not understanding myself, it used to work just fine, and then one day, it just, didn't

x0
Quiet public

@masonasons @josh @simon @LaurenCeleste @app Python version or some kind of app manifest junk maybe IDK. Is worth seeing where in the pipeline the error is coming from, if there needs to be an encoding declaration somewhere or what.

@x0 @masonasons @josh @simon @LaurenCeleste @app Speaking of Python, or this might just be a WX thingy, but I've noticed that not all elements are properly displayed, obviously screen readers read them fine, but on screen they're either truncated or non-existent. That's not a problem for those of us who completely rely on a screen reader, but for people who like to use magnification, or even people like my GF @chloehodges who's sighted, if she tried to use the TC Windows app she'd struggle coz a lot of the elements aren't displayed properly or at all.

@simon @x0 @app @masonasons same opinion here, I'm just trying it out and putting it through it's paces. :)

@x0 @LaurenCeleste @app @masonasons I do remember having a similar issue when I used it on my Mac, it’s been a long time since I’ve used it on Mac because of this fiddly issue. It can be done, but it’s nowhere near as easy as it should be. If she wants a really good voice accessible App for mastodon, Mona is my choice. For all of the other ones that are in tweesecake, there are likely Mac equivalent things you can use. I can try spinning up a copy of the app and work out the way to navigate it later and try to put together a little help document to work through the app

Mew✨🥰

@SerenaTori @x0 @LaurenCeleste @app not for Telegram, sadly. For most of the rest, yes.

@SerenaTori @LaurenCeleste We figured out navigation anyway, but unfortunately I don't think there is any replacement for telegram on mac.

@x0 @SerenaTori @LaurenCeleste Nicegram or Swiftgram might run on the Mac.
Just another reason I've basically given up on that platform.

@x0 @LaurenCeleste Yeah, not sure about telegram. I ended up stop using it even on my iPhone, because the accessibility was just getting worse and worse LOL.

@x0 @SerenaTori Fuck telegram I'm literally gonna stop using it because it's such ass. I'd rather deal with the bs editor that's facebook than deal with telegram on mac really. fuck telegram. If you don't make your shit accessible or at least try I'm not interested.

Serena 🏳️‍🌈
Quiet public

@LaurenCeleste @x0 Exactly. And unfortunately telegram is one of those ones where ironically the unigram app on Windows was pretty much the only good way to access it. Outside of tweesecake that is. But I’ve pretty much abandoned it. Haven’t erased my account or anything, just don’t tend to use it. I might check out the iPhone app again and see if it’s gotten any better, but I somehow doubt it LOL.

@SerenaTori @x0 @app @masonasons Yeah I've seen that mona seems to be the way to go, right now I'm trying twc but hey...
