The state of Linux accessibility in 2025. This started out as a rant but became a series. I love this rant. The best part of my career was maintaining a manufacturing facility where legally blind workers ran the plant floor and all the machines. It was amazing when they would ask for help and they showed me how to improve the accessibility and quality control checking systems. They were able to run production often better than sighted workers, because we worked together to maintain accessibility. Maintaining accessibility with Linux would be greatly rewarding too
@dianea I was slightly concerned people would just think it some word vomit from an out of touch computer toucher
Good to hear this rant. Accessibility should never be silent! We need this discussion in everyday conversation and I am thankful for your rant to raise awareness. From my experience, we all win with accessibility as the hurdles of incomplete engineering affects us all. Improving accessibility is a great opportunity to improve everyone's quality of life.
@fireborn I frequently get frustrated with commentary about this from disabled people on Mastodon, since it is often entitled if not downright insulting contributors/maintainers.
In that sense, I approve of your commentary here because it is much more differentiated and calls out problems and frustrations without attacking people who don't deserve it.
@nightoo I'm not here to attack anyone, simply say things as they are. I've had a lot of good come out of this series so far (nothing I can fully disclose yet) but things are happening. So I'm encouraged to keep writing in this vein.
