Seeing reports that the installer in #fedora 42 has regressed where #accessibility is concerned. Haven't tested this but given the track record of most #linux distributions over the last few decades it wouldn't surprise me in the least. This is also why people can't always just #switchToLinux. The day distros don't just preach their a system for the people and that everyone should be able to use it, but actually walk the walk and consistently walk the walk is when I might consider giving switching more time and attention. Until then, I'd rather deal with the devil I know

@zersiax if you use the Mate spin, the 42 installer is completely unusable. the 42 workstation installer however is completely accessible.

@fireborn So ... what a lot of people consider the most accessible desktop environment has an inaccessible installer, and the thing that is more modern, possibly more accessible but lesser known to be has an accessible installer. Yeah ... that's about what I expect from this area of cyberspace :)

@zersiax Gnome is generally about as accessible as Mate now, if not more so. At least you can actually interact with the system tray and notifications.

@fireborn GOod to know. Depending on who I ask, I hear Gnome is accessible, gnome sucks, latest versions of KDE are accessible and sometimes they're awful, some people swear by pipewire and say it's the best thing ever but actually sometimes when you run it in a VM it loses its little mind and starts stuttering like crazy ...I think I'm good with Mac/Windows for now

@zersiax @fireborn It's also thankfully something that's being addressed on the Fedora side and there's a workaround for now discussion.fedoraproject.org/t

Meanwhile I'm planning to turn a spare computer into a little linux homeserver which I haven't gotten around to yet, but I figure if I'm gonna do that I might as well also at least try the gui situation because I last did it in 2015 and it might be fun to blog/podcast about, so this topic of what to go with is kind of fresh on my mind. I figure Fedora is my best bet for being the most up to date when it comes to things like Orca without going to Arch, which is what I had back then and still have ptsd from manually installing mate and then having a half broken audio mixer... So has modern Gnome gotten to the point of being pleasant to use or is Mate still the safer bet? What about Electron based apps, I remember hearing they had accessibility issues when ran from Mate?

Fedora Discussion · Fedora 42 version not working with anaconda orcaHello, I have Windows 11 Pro on my computer and I want to remove Windows and install Fedora 42. When I want to install with Orca, unfortunately Orca and Anaconda do not work and Anaconda does not read or voice the menus.
